A Letter from Stephanie Campbell Friends, This week, FOR-NY and the Long Island Recovery Community Association (LIRA) traveled to Washington DC to participate in the 2017 Association of Recovery Community Organizations (ARCO) Leadership Academy, at Faces & Voices of Recovery. Family to Family Recovery Research Guide Now Available In response to requests for help from families across New York State struggling with a loved one’s addiction, FOR-NY, with support from the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS OASAS), has created the Family to Family Recovery Resource Guide. This comprehensive, downloadable, free guide is based on feedback provided by family members from throughout the state who have “been there.” READ MORE | | | |
Stories of Recovery In 2009, my only son graduated high school with a 3.8 GPA and an academic scholarship to the university of his choice. By the spring of 2010, it was clear that he had "gone astray." Our straight “A” student had suddenly lost his scholarship and was headed back home to attend community college. I tried to dismiss these actions as immaturity and experimentation -- behaviors that many college-aged students display when they leave home for the first time. READ MORE | | | |

Recovery Community & Outreach Centers One of New York’s newest Recovery Community & Outreach Centers (RCOCs) is the Peer Alliance Recovery Center (PARC) located in Jamaica, Queens. Since first opening its doors in April of this year, the Center (a program of Samaritan Daytop Village) has been offering free workshops and group sessions, social and recreational activities, vocational assistance and peer-to-peer support from on-staff Recovery Coaches to members of the community who are either in or seeking recovery from addiction to alcohol or other drugs; as well as their family members. Peer Professionals: Peer Mentoring in Correctional Facilities Connecting for Purpose, that’s the name of the organization founded by this month’s featured Recovery Coach, Michelle Raysor, CARC, MA, CRC, CASAC, LMHC. Connecting, for purpose, is what Recovery Coaching is all about! It was a pleasure connecting with Ms. Raysor, about her life and her life’s calling, which is to work with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. READ MORE | | | |
Policy Corner: Treatment on Demand We see the need for insurers, providers, state and county government to work with recovery community organizations to ensure that immediate access to treatment becomes the norm, rather than the exception. Anyone who needs treatment must have access to treatment that is on par with other medical conditions. READ MORE | | | |
New Training: Community Asset Mapping (CAM) Community Asset Mapping (CAM) training focuses on assessing and maintaining inventories of strengths, assets and other resources that might be beneficial to building partnerships with the recovery community, as well as provide ongoing engagement strategies with allies of the recovery community. FOR-NY held its first CAM training in June and will be bringing it to communities throughout the state in the coming months. READ MORE | | | |
Pathways of Recovery: Faith-based Faith-based recovery can be traced back to early Native American tribes, the Washingtonian Movement, the Oxford Group, and Alcoholics Anonymous; all of which included some degree of spiritual principles. Many individuals in active addiction have little or no faith in the possibility of recovery or any concept of a higher power. In fact, they don't have faith in very much at all and may feel abandoned by family, friends, and certainly a god of their understanding. Faith-based recovery programs provide hope. READ MORE | | | |
